KNC calls for unity to maintain civil peace in Syria’s northeast

Duhok, Iraqi Kurdistan− The Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNC) condemned in a statement the recent attacks by Islamist groups against Kurdish areas north Syria.

The council called on the Syrian opposition to take action against Islamist rebel groups after several attacks against areas in the southern suburb of the Kurdish city of Qamishli, northeast Syria.

Fierce clashes took place start of January between the Islamist fighters and the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) −armed wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD). Dozens of YPG fighters were killed during the clashes.

The PYD has earlier demanded the KNC (member of the Syrian National Coalition) to explain its position towards the developments, especially after the coalition said that the PYD and its forces hold hostility towards the Syrian revolution.

The Kurdish National Council, which consists of 13 Kurdish parties, stressed its determination to put pressures on every faction that oppose the rights of the Kurdish people in Syria, emphasizing the importance of reaching a unity between the Kurdish factions −in reference to the rifts between the council and the PYD.

The KNC’ statement, issued after a meeting in Qamishli city on Friday, called on the different components of the community in the area −Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians and other minorities− to be aware of the attempts which aim to damage the social unity in the area, without specifying the attempters.

“Solidarity is a key factor to prevent a civil war among the region’s components. We are all responsible to preserve our areas against a potential long-term conflict between the different components of this community,” the KNC said. “We should be aware of the attempts of some groups to ignite sedition in our region where diversity constitutes one of the main pillars for our survival and power.”

The KNC emphasized the necessity of maintaining what it called “the historical coexistence” in Syria’s Kurdish areas.

Kawa Azizi, member of the Kurdish National Council (KNC), said that the council considers itself as a genuine participant in the Syrian revolution.

“The Kurds have always resisted dictatorship and tyranny. Since its formation, the KNC clearly declared its position towards the war in Syria as an active participant in the revolution, with a deep believe in the legitimate right of the Syrian people in freedom, including the Kurds,” he told ARA News.

Azizi said that the rifts between the KNC and PYD (with its armed forces) was caused by the latter’s intention to marginalize the council’s role in the Kurdish areas.

“We always look for compromise and reconciliation to end rifts with other factions in the region, because we are all responsible for maintaining civil peace in our areas,” Azizi concluded.
