Illegally into Turkey: Border guards prevent Syrians from crossing

ARA News

Urfa, Turkey− Turkish border guards clashed on Wednesday with migrant smugglers in a Kurdish border village near Kobane city, north Syria.

The smugglers were assisting a number of Syrian emigrants to illegally cross the borders into Turkey on Wednesday evening, when the Turkish border guards opened fire.

Eyewitnesses from the city of Kobane told ARA News that the Turkish guards fired bullets in the air to urge the smugglers to return and that the clashes which occurred with light arms didn’t result in any casualties.

Due to the closure of all the border crossings to Turkey by the Turkish authorities, Syrians have to rely on migrant smugglers to cross the border. The closure came after clashes erupted between the al-Qaeda linked group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other Islamic groups along the border line with Turkey.

Within the same context, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the Turkish authorities denied more than 2000 Syrian refugees −gathered since 18 days at the borders− the right to enter its territories. Most of the refugees sleep in the open air close to the border barbed wires near Tel Abyad city after they escaped increasing violence in Raqqa city.
