Qamishli, Syria− The southern countryside of Hasaka city saw renewed clashes between Islamist groups on Wednesday.

Over the last three weeks, sporadic clashes occur between fighters of al-Nusra Front −backed by rebels of the Islamic Front− and members of the al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in the southern countryside of Hasaka, northeast of Syria.

Violence erupted in the town of Margada and spread to Atshana and al-Thalja. While Shaddadi city (50km south of Hasaka) remains under the control of the fighters of ISIL.

Ammar Abdul Rahman, a media activist based in the city of Hasakah, told ARA News that Margada town and its surroundings witness tensions in light of the continuous clashes between rebels of the Islamic Front and Jabhat al-Nusra on the one hand, and the ISIL fighters on the other hand.

“The situation escalated in the area especially after al-Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham (which works under the banner of the Islamic Front) controlled the town (Margada)”, Abdul Rahman reported.

“The Islamic Front controlled the grain silos west of the town, imposing siege over al-Thalja station, as fighting intensified near the village of Atshana between ISIL members and fighters of al-Nusra and the Islamic Front,” said Abdul Rahman. “Meanwhile, a mortar shell dropped near Atshana’s major mosque without resulting in any casualties.”

He pointed out that the ISIL sent a representative to negotiate with fighters of the Islamic Front Tuesday evening , suggesting to stop fighting between the two sides as ISIL allows the Islamic Front to control Shaddadi city (50 km south of Hasakah), while conditioning taking control of Margada town by ISIL.

“The ISIL also asked the Islamic Front to install barriers on the main road between Shaddadi and Margada,” Abdul Rahamn added. “But the Islamic Front rejected the terms of ISIL, and raised the slogan of either the Islamic Front will remain in Syria or ISIL“.
