Damascus, Syria – At least 16 civilians were killed, mostly children, in the Qabun neighborhood in Damascus, amid a bombardment by pro-Assad military forces, local sources reported on Wednesday.

Speaking to ARA News in Damascus, Sameer Haman, media activist and resident of Qabun, said that pro-Assad army forces launched mortar attack against the neighborhood, “bombing several residential buildings and causing death and injury to dozens of civilians”.

“The bodies of at least 16 children were found under the ruins of bombed buildings on Wednesday,” Haman reported.

The neighborhood of Qabun, with a population of approximately 40,000, saw similar attacks in July, until an agreement was reached between the opposition fighters who were in control of the neighborhood and pro-regime army forces.

Qabun was controlled by the opposition fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) during the summer of 2012. Afterwards, pro-regime forces besieged the neighborhood clashing with the FSA rebels.
