Damascus, Syria – Insurgents of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIL) killed dozens of pro-Assad soldiers in an attack on the eastern countryside of Homs in central Syria, IS-linked media sources said Saturday.

The IS issued a statement saying its militants were able to kill dozens of Syrian regime soldiers during an attack on the latter’s security checkpoints in the vicinity of al-Shaer field for natural gas in the eastern countryside of Homs.

“The Islamic State fighters attacked the regime-held checkpoints on the highway between Palmira and Homs, and were able to kill a number of pro-regime soldiers as well as seizing their weapons,” IS media sources reported.

However, the Syrian state news agency of SANA said Saturday that the regime’s army forces were able to repel an attack by terrorist groups on military bases in eastern Homs.

In Damascus, the rebels of the rebels’ Joint Command were able to thwart an attempt by the pro-Assad military forces to penetrate the Jobar neighborhood in eastern Damascus. Military sources in Jobar described the attack as the deadliest of its kind in months.

“Assad’s military forces used artillery shelling along with toxic gases against rebels in Jobar,” the sources said.

Speaking to ARA News in Damascus, media activist Omar Hamed reported that clashes erupted Saturday between the Joint Command battalions and the pro-regime forces after the latter’s attempt to advance in the town of Zebdin, near Jobar.

Hamid also said that hundreds of civilians, mostly women and children, arrived in the neighboring regime-held city of Jaramana, escaping the violent clashes in Zebdin.
