Suruc, Turkey – International sympathy increases towards the city of Kobane for its strong resistance against extremists of the Islamic State (IS/ ISIS), an al Qaeda offshoot.
A few days after the Cyprian Parliament consensus decision to support Kobane, the U.N. special envoy to Syria, Steffan de Mistura, stated, “The International Community should not leave Kobane all alone.”
“IS is progressing to Aleppo away from Kobane, so it is a chance for us to save the city,” de Mistura told reported in New York.
The special envoy pointed out that in order to stop IS opposition forces need to freeze other fronts and concentrate on fighting the group “and Aleppo is the proper place for that”.
“IS is the most dangerous threat at the moment , so if a city like Kobane decided to resist IS, we have to support it,” de Mistura said.
Speaking to ARA News in this regard, Kurdish legal activist Abd al-Majid Sefrani mentioned the semi-complete cordon imposed by the regime on the city of Aleppo and IS domination on most of Aleppo countryside.
“Kobane is a role model that should be followed; fighters there showed resistance and bravery. Moreover, the organized civic action helped to convey the city’s voice to the whole world to bring support to the embattled Kurdish city,” Sefrani said.
Following a month and a half of ongoing attacks on Kobane, IS has had huge losses without being able to control the city.
