Duhok, Iraqi Kurdistan – On Sunday, President Massoud Barzani held a summit on Mount Sinjar of Iraqi Kurdistan in the presence of military commanders of the Peshmerga forces.

This comes one day after the Kurdish forces of the Peshmerga lifted the siege on Mount Sinjar and freed hundreds of Yezidis who were stranded there after escaping the Shingal area in August, when militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) seized the Yezidi-majority area.

“Peshmerga forces were able to lift the siege on Mount Sinjar after defeating IS terrorists there, and we want to emphasize the role of the international coalition in supporting our forces to accomplish this great victory in Sinjar,” Barzani said.

“If we had had sufficient heavy weapons we would have freed this region from IS extremists earlier.”

President of Iraqi Kurdistan also stressed the role of Yezidi fighters and volunteers who participated in the operations against IS militants in Sinjar.

“We have planned programs to rebuild the area after riding  it of these terrorists, but we cannot deny that the psychological rehabilitation will be a difficult tast while bringing life back to the Yezidi areas,” Barzani said.

On Saturday, the leadership of the Peshmerga forces announced liberating Sinjar from IS militants and freeing the stranded Yezidis following military operations against the radical group in the area, during which dozens of IS members were reportedly killed before the withdrawal of the rest.

The war-torn Yezidi-majority area of Shingal in northern Iraq is still witnessing clashes between the Kurds and the radical group.
