Urfa, Turkey – On Monday, fighters of the Operations Chamber of Burkan al-Furat (a coalition of forces defending the embattled city of Kobane) reportedly killed a prominent commander of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS).

Military sources told ARA News that Jundallah Shishani, a renowned commander in the ranks of the IS radical group, was killed during clashes with fighters of the Burkan al-Furat in the city of Kobane, in northern Syria.

The Operations Chamber of Burkan al-Furat was formed in September by the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and battalions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) to defend Kobane against militants of IS.

Shishani is considered one of the closest persons to Abu Omar Georgi, the military commander of the Islamic State radical group.

Speaking to ARA News in Kobane, Amer Hassan, director of the Media Center of the FSA-linked Fajr al-Hurriya Brigades, stressed that during the last 48 hours the defending forces of the city (YPG, Peshmerga, and FSA-linked factions) killed 14 IS militants during military operations in the Botan neighborhood of the southern part of the city.

“The defending forces were able to control two streets in Botan neighborhood, seizing arms and ammunition.”

“Shishani’s corpse was among 13 other bodies of IS members that fell under the hands of the defending forces,” the FSA-linked source added.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the death toll of the IS group in the city of Kobane rose to 1000 since the start of the battle for Kobane, while the death toll among the city’s defending fighters has reached 500.
