Istanbul, Turkey – A UAE court convicted 11 men, including citizens and residents of Syria, on charges of “seeking to form an al-Qaeda-linked group and send fighters to join Syria’s armed factions”.
According to the UAE-based National newspaper, the State Security Service in the Federal High Court of the United Arab Emirates sentenced four EUA citizens to life imprisonment.
The other 7 detainees, who hold Syrian and Comorosian nationalities, were sentenced to 15 years.
The convicted faced accusations of belonging to the Nusra Front (al-Qaeda branch in Syria) and the Syrian Islamic Movement of Ahrar al-Sham. They are also accused of funding the two groups.
“The prosecutor said that the defendants headed to Syria to join armed groups after collecting money, explosives and equipment for use in attacks on civilians in Syria,”the National reported.
The UAE had announced earlier last month its list of “terrorist organizations” which included nearly 23 Syrian armed factions, including al-Nusra Front, the Islamic Movement of Ahrar al-Sham and a number of battalions the U.S. described as “moderate”.
