Qamishli, Syria – The Syrian Foreign Minister, Walid al-Moualem, said Wednesday that Turkey is the major enemy of the Syrian people and is exploiting the situations in neighboring countries.

He added that the relationship between the ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) in Turkey and the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) is no longer confidential.

“Turkey represents a strategic base for the IS extremists, not only through the border crossings, but also through the provision of medical care and recreation, housing as well as access to commercial markets for the stolen IS oil, cotton and wheat that are often for sale in the Turkish marketplace,” al-Moualem added.

The Syrian Foreign Minister also said that if the United States wants to genuinely eliminate the IS extremists, there is only one option, and that is to cooperate with the Syrian government, “because there is no force as capable of confronting IS as the Syrian Arab Army”.

“The United States will not risk sending their soldiers to fight IS or the Syrian Arab Army; they cannot bear human losses,” al-Moualem argued.

Regarding the upcoming peace talks in Moscow, the Syrian FM emphasized the role of Russia “as a friend” in finding a peaceful solution based on political dialogue in Syria.

“Russia will help hold a dialogue between the Syrians and the goal is clear: to reach a genuinely Syrian solution for the crisis and agree on Syrian-Syrian dialogue in the future, the Syrian Minister said.

He also explained that the refusal of some opposition parties to join Moscow talks “is up to them”.

The Syrian minister pointed out that Russia had been subjected to enormous economic pressures, which has affected the value of its currency (the ruble), despite the variety of resources and markets around the country.

“No one can punish Russia, and the pressure will not affect Moscow’s position towards Syria,” al-Moualem said, adding that Russia is powered by “steadfastness of the Syrians in the war against terrorism”.

“Those who put pressures on Russia are the same party to put pressure on Damascus.”
