Damascus, Syria – Clashes broke out between rebel fighters from Aknaf Bait al-Maqdis and militants of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) Wednesday morning in the Yarmouk Camp for Palestinian refugees, south of the Syrian capital Damascus.

Speaking to ARA News in Damascus, civil rights activist Ahmed Sabbagh said that the clashes broke out after the infiltration of a group of IS insurgents to the Yarmouk district, south of Damascus through the al-Hajar al-Aswad neighborhood.

“IS militants attacked locations of al-Maqdis fighters after one day of the latter’s campaign of arrests against IS activists in Yarmouk,” the source added.

Sabbagh said that al-Maqdis fighters accused the IS hardline group of assassinating the Palestinian leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Abu Suhaib.

“That’s why the al-Maqdis group arrested the members of IS residing in the Yarmouk camp after the assassination’s perpetrators escaped toward the al-Hajar al-Aswad neighborhood,” the source added.

On the other hand, S.M., a resident from the Mazzeh district of Damascus told ARA News (on the condition of anonymity) that an explosive device, which was planted under a car belonging to Syrian security forces, exploded Tuesday in the neighborhood.

“The explosion resulted in the death and injury of dozens of the regime’s security forces,” the source said.

“Members of the pro-regime forces –stationed at checkpoints near the Mazzeh military airport– opened fire against civilians, following the car bombing,” he said, pointing out that heavy machine guns were used and resulted in casualties among civilians, including women and children.

Samer Haddad, a doctor in a field hospital in the district told ARA News that ten civilians lost their lives due to the regime forces’s shooting, while 30 others were injured.

Noteworthy, battles are still continuing between the IS militants and al-Maqdis fighters in the Yarmouk refugee camp, amid reports on progress of the IS in the southern suburbs of Damascus.
