Qamishli, Syria – At least six militant fighters of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) were killed and others injured during clashes with the Syrian regime forces in the southern countryside of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, military sources reported on Friday.

A Syrian military officer said: “A unit of the Syrian Arab army carried out a strategic operation against the terrorists (IS) in the villages of al-Badran and Aweyna southeast of the city of Hasakah, killing more than six militants and injuring dozens others.”

The source added that the operation resulted in the destruction of a number of military vehicles used by the “terrorist group” some of which were supported with heavy machine guns.

“Subsequent to monitoring the insurgents’ movements, units of the Syrian Arab Army were able to cause several casualties in their ranks after targeting them in the vicinity of the village of Rafraf (10 km west of Hasakah city),” the source reported.

In another development, civil rights activist Rizan Hussein, based in the town of Jawadiya in Hasakah province, told ARA News that a grenade exploded Thursday evening in the center of the Kurdish security forces of Asayish, resulting in the injury of three security members, who were transferred to the national hospital of the city of Derik (Malikiyah).

Noteworthy, the Islamic State group has been striving to gain control over major areas in the province for more than two years. The group has been engaged in fighting the Syrian regime south of Hasakah, while combatting the Kurdish forces in western Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and the areas surrounding the city of Tel Temir where Assyrians constitute majority.
