ISIS flag raised at top of ancient citadel in Palmyra, Syria

ARA News

Damascus, Syria – After taking over the Syrian ancient city of Palmyra, extremist fighters of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) have reportedly raised their flag over its citadel.

IS-linked activists posted pictures online showing the group’s flag waving at the top of Palmyra’s ancient citadel.

The militant group captured the city after days of fierce battles with the Syrian army forces on Wednesday.

The group has earlier destroyed ancient monuments and antiquities in several archeological sites after taking over large areas across Syria and Iraq.

Observers expect the group to do the same in the city of Palmyra, which contains renowned Roman ruins. Palmyra holds an ancient citadel, a theatre, well-preserved temples and colonnades.

According to local activists, the fight for Palmyra has claimed lives of hundreds of fighters from the Syrian army and the radical group.
