Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – Militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) shot down an Iraqi fighter jet north of Ramadi city in Anbar Province, IS reported in a statement on Thursday.

The group said on its Twitter account that its militants shot down the Iraqi warplane while it was carrying out a raid against the IS-held city of Ramadi.

The Russian-made Su-25 was reportedly seen in flames as it crashed after being shot down north of Ramadi, military sources told Reuters on Thursday.

The IS radical group, which holds a third of Iraq, has been under attacks by the U.S.-led international coalition, Iraqi government forces and Kurdish Peshmerga army for months.
