Tel Abyad, Syria – The Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) advanced into areas controlled by the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) in the northern countryside of Raqqa province, northeastern Syria, military sources reported on Monday.

The IS militants withdrew from villages in the countryside of Tel Abyad after the YPG and rebels of Burkan al-Furat (joint forces) gained control over the entire city, with the support of the U.S.-led coalition’s warplanes.

The spokesman of the Kurdish forces, Redur Khalil, reported that the joint forces are only 50 km far from the city of Raqqa –main IS headquarters in Syria.

“The YPG forces are battling IS on the outskirts of the base ‘Brigade 93’ southwest of the Ain Issa town,” a YPG fighter told ARA News..

The Syrian military base of ‘Brigade 93’ has been taken over by the group months agoafter battles with the pro-Assad army.

Speaking to ARA News, Sarhad Abbas, fighter in the YPG’s ranks, said: “Our forces in the eastern countryside of Tel Abyad were able Monday to control large parts of the ‘Brigade 93’. Dozens of IS terrorists were killed during the clashes.”

Thousands of people have fled the war torn areas towards Raqqa city over the past two days, local sources said.

In the meantime, pro-opposition media sources accused the Kurdish forces of carrying out what they described “ethnic cleansing” against Arabs and Turkmans north of Raqqa.

However, rebel forces denied the accusations directed to the Kurdish forces, saying that many people who fled to Raqqa city are considered an incubator of the radical group and that’s why they headed to Raqqa rather than Turkey.
