Qamishli, Syria – Hussein Kocher, Commander of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), said that airstrikes of the U.S.-led international coalition has backed their fighters in the recent weeks and enabled them to make “remarkable advance” against militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS).

“The U.S.-led coalition has played a significant role in backing our (YPG) fighters against the terrorists. The recent airstrikes enabled our forces to make a remarkable advance in northeastern Syria,” Kocher told ARA News in an exclusive interview on Friday.

The YPG Commander added that the IS group relies on armored vehicles and heavy machine guns, which requires airstrikes in order to destroy their vehicles to enable the Kurdish fighters progress more quickly on the ground.

“Daesh (IS) terrorists rely on heavy weapons, so when the U.S.-led airstrikes hit the group that helps our forces to advance on the ground more smoothly and cause the terrorist group greater losses,” he said.

“Since the start of our military campaign against Daesh, our fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) have been coordinating with the U.S.-led international coalition.”

According to Kocher, IS militants have been using villages and residential areas as strongholds from which they used to attack the Jazeera canton in northeastern Syria.

“They (IS militants) also use residential areas as bombing centers to prepare explosive cars for suicide attacks. Thus we took the decision to cleanse the borders of Jazeera canton from those terrorists in order to prevent any attacks on civilians,” the YPG Commander told ARA News.

Kocher said that the YPG forces are currently battling the radical group near the strategic town of Suluk in the countryside of Raqqa.

“At the moment, there are clashes between our YPG fighters and terrorists of Daesh in the vicinity of the strategic town of Suluk,” he said, adding that other rebel factions are participating in the anti-IS campaign in northern Syria.

“Allied fighters of Tahrir Brigade are also participating in the ongoing clashes against Daesh. Few members of the brigade were killed last week when a mine planted by Daesh terrorists exploded under a manned-car.”

“There are several armed factions who have joined the YPG in the fight against Daesh, including Revolutionaries of Raqqa, Sanadid Brigade, Syriac Military Council and several Arab tribal forces,” the YPG Commander told ARA News. “They all joined the front lines of battles against the terrorists.”
