Damascus, Syria – Rebels of Islamic Movement of Ahrar ash-Sham reported Tuesday that repelling a fierce offensive by militants of Hezbollah in the city of Zabadani near the Lebanese border.
The attack centered in the western mountain and Jamiyat district in Zabadani, rebel sources reported.
“Subsequent to fierce clashes with Hezbollah militants, our fighters were able to maintain their positions after forcing Hezbollah to withdraw from the vicinity of Zabadani,” the opposition-linked movement said in a statement. “Our fighters took over two Syrian regime-held checkpoints in the vicinity of the city.”
The Syrian regime took control of Jamiyat district with the support of Hezbollah two days ago, but rebels retook it on Tuesday.
Rebel fighters have taken control of the western mountain in the vicinity of Zabadani after the withdrawal of Hezbollah gunmen to the Shaara on the Syrian-Lebanese border.
Regime forces continued Tuesday bombing Zabadani districts with airstrikes. Local sources told ARA News that dozens of civilians were killed during the renewed strikes.
Activists documented that some 300 barrel bombs hit the city during the past two days.
