Geneva – On Friday, the UK government announced that British pilots are participating in airstrikes over Syria alongside the US and other member states of the international coalition, which marks a significant step up in UK’s involvement in the war against the radical group of Islamic State (IS/ISIS).

A spokeswoman for Cameron said in a statement that British military personnel, who joined anti-IS strikes in Syria, are effectively operating as foreign troops “in accordance with UK law and the appropriate rules of engagement”.

The British Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Friday that the UK pilots work with a long-standing “embed program” under which British personnel “act under the command of host nations.”

According to the UK government, the anti-IS operations under the embed program help the UK strengthen its relationships with allies and allow the armed forces to develop new skills.

Defense Ministry revealed that about 10 personnel have taken part in the strikes on IS-held locations in Syria, using US aircraft.
