URFA – A Libyan commander in the ranks of the Islamic State group (ISIS) was killed when rifts hit the group’s ranks and turned violent in Syria’s Raqqa, local sources reported on Tuesday.

Abu Huzaifa al-Libi, a prominent commander of the Islamic State in Raqqa, was shot dead by a Syrian militant after disputes turned into violence between them on Tuesday.

An activist in Raqqa told ARA News (on the condition of anonymity) that al-Libi was killed after trying to force fellow militants to head to the fighting front in al-Hawl town in the northeastern Syrian province of Hasakah.

“When a group of Syrian members of ISIS refused al-Libi’s orders to join the battles in al-Hawl, he (al-Libi) threatened to execute them. One of the Syrian militants reacted on the commander’s threat by shooting him in the head,” the source said.

“The Syrian militant who killed al-Libi descends from Deir ez-Zor province,” he added.

Local militants of the Islamic State protested the growing power of foreign members of the group. Libyan, Jordanian and Saudi militants have been promoted to commanding positions in the ranks of ISIS, which led to disputes that have turned violent in the last few weeks.

Additionally, the unequal distribution of money has become another reason for rifts among the militants.

On Monday, an internal clash in the ranks of the Islamic State claimed lives of 17 militants in an Iraqi town.

Rifts hit the ranks of the radical group over money and power in Baaj region west of Mosul, leading to a violent clash during which a total of 17 ISIS members were killed, according to Saeed Mamouzini, the media official of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Mosul.

“A clash broke out today between two parties of ISIS in Baaj region western Mosul on the background of problems because of money distribution and power,” Mamouzini told local media on Monday.

Mamouzini added that ISIS is witnessing a state of fragmentation and divisions.
