KOBANE – Militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) launched several attacks on areas held by the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria, military sources reported on Friday.

The radical group targeted headquarters of the Kurdish forces in the villages of Sihrij and Heyale Kayala south of Kobane. The group hit YPG centers with mortar shells, which led to clashes between the two sides in the vicinity of the targeted villages.

“The clashes, that continued until Friday evening, led to the destruction of two ISIS vehicles under the shelling of our (YPG) forces on the group’s positions in the southern countryside of Kobane,” YPG spokesman Habun Osman told ARA News on the phone.

“Five ISIS terrorists were killed during the clashes, while two of our fighters lost their lives and four were hardly injured,” Osman said.

Also on Friday, clashes broke out between the YPG and ISIS in the Kurdish village of Zor Maghar at the bank of Euphrates River west of Kobane.

“The terror group shelled villagers’ houses in Zor Maghar, where more than ten civilians were killed,” The YPG spokesman said. “Our forces responded by bombing ISIS strongholds near Jarablus city.”

In the meantime, Media Office of the YPG said in a statement: “Our forces repelled an attack by the terrorists near the Sarrin town in Kobane countryside on Friday.”

“Clashes broke out after a group of Daesh (ISIS) terrorists tried to infiltrate into Sarrin. Under the blows of our forces, the terrorists withdrew,” the statement read.

The YPG spokesman Habun Osman confirmed in an interview with ARA News that the extremist group has brought heavy weapons to the Euphrates area west of Kobane in preparation for a new battle against the Kurdish forces.

“ISIS military reinforcements included tanks, heavy machine guns and hundreds of militants,” he said. “We will continue defending Kobane region against the ambitions of this terrorist group.”
