DAMASCUS – The Syrian regime is ready to join U.N.-sponsored peace talks to end the ongoing war, especially with its current position bolstered by the Russian support and the considerable shift in the Western approach towards Assad, top advisor of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Bouthaina Shaaban, said on Wednesday.

Shaaban said that the Syrian government has approved the recent U.N. resolution regarding an internationally-sponsored road map for a peace process in Syria.

“We accept these resolutions,” she said.

Shaaban pointed out in an interview with the pro-Hezbollah al-Mayadeen television that the Western stance towards Assad and his regime has softened, especially after the terror attacks by Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants in Paris mid-Nov.

The U.S.-led coalition and Russia have recently intensified their airstrikes against jihadists’ positions in Syria, especially against ISIS.

The West has called on Assad to leave power as a condition for the success of any peace process. However, the Syrian regime has repeatedly refused such calls, arguing that Syria’s presidency remains an internal issue.

“It was not easy for the West to retreat. This is the first time that the West’s word has been defeated over Syria,” Shaaban said. “The Russian strategy in getting these diplomatic understandings is successful and clever and will bear fruit.”

“The Russian intervention has had great importance in the Syrian crisis,” she stressed.

“We are now in a much better position than before. There is real international partnership to combat terror, a big understanding of (our) position and the turnaround that started a year ago is now coming to a full circle,” Assad’s top advisor told the Lebanon-based television.

This comes just one day after the U.N. special envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, revealed plans to hold a new round of Syria peace talks in Geneva next month.
