QAMISHLI – The Kurdish National Council (KNC) –that is part of the Syrian coalition– condemned the comments of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mister over Syrian Kurds and accused him of a lack of impartiality. Also TEV-DEM which is linked to the Democratic Union Party (PYD) called on the UN Envoy to be more neutral.

De Mistura has angered the Kurds by suggesting that they are only five per cent of the population, and are provoking Syrians by asking for federalism.

“The Kurdish National Council in Syria strongly rejects this reduction of the role of Syrian Kurds. Stating this false estimate plays into the hands of the Syrian regime which suppressed and persecuted the Kurds for many decades,” the KNC said in a statement on Monday.

“The Syrian regime even tried to reduce the numbers of Syrian Kurds by stripping them of their citizenship (census of 1962), an injustice causing severe disadvantages for these Kurds and their predecessors,” the KNC said added.

According to estimates of the UNCHR and Human Rights Watch the Kurds account for 10 to 15 per cent of the population, while the KNC says it was at least 15 per cent.

“By the above mentioned statement the UN Special Envoy is again downplaying the role of Syrian Kurds in the process of building the future of their country,” the KNC added. “The KNC repeatedly urged the UN Special Envoy to recognize the Kurdish participation in the peace talks – but he never did. Likewise, he turned down all offers to hold technical talks in order to get to know the perspective of the official Kurdish representatives to the talks,” the KNC added.

According to the KNC the statements by the UN special envoy raises doubts about his impartiality.

“The KNC demands that the United Nations Organisation recalls the impartial and humanitarian role it is supposed to play,” the KNC said.

The statements of the UN envoy were not only condemned by the KNC, but also by Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM), the rival of the KNC.

“We are surprised to hear such statements from a UN official, who should have been fully aware of all the facts and details of the case that he is responsible for. This is a serious and worrisome sign of his lack of knowledge about his task, which will have direct drastic consequences on his objectivity and impartiality,” TEV-DEM said.

“His statement distorts and misrepresents, perhaps inadvertently, facts about the existence of the Kurds in Rojava Kurdistan. Therefore, we ask Mr. de Mistura to seek facts diligently and publish them objectively. We are confident that Mr. de Mistura is fully aware of the fact that the rights of peoples and their worth are not measured by quantity and size,” TEV-DEM added.
